Native to the Mid-Atlantic and the Midwest, wingstem is a tall plant of moist woodlands and prairies. In fall it bears daisy-like golden flowers atop 6' stems. When in bloom wingstem attracts butterflies and a variety of native bees and wasps. Its seeds are eaten by birds, and its leaves are a host for several kinds of caterpillars. Not the most showy of the daisy family, but offers great ecological value. Wingstem spreads readily by rhizomes and seed and is best grown where it has room. Plant in sun to partial shade in medium to moist soil.
