Helianthus divaricatus (woodland sunflower)

This 5' tall sunflower can grow in sun but prefers partial shade, and dry to medium soil moisture. It spreads by rhizomes and will make large stands over time, so it can function as a tall shade-loving ground cover. 2-inch yellow flowers bloom midsummer through fall. The leaves feed caterpillars, the flowers feed bees and the seeds feed birds, so this is a supermarket of a native plant.
