A native neighbor from the Southeast and Midwest, this is a very tall plant (to 6') that adapts to a variety of soil conditions and reseeds vigorously. Use it against a wall, or in a meadow with room to spread. Its dense flower heads attract many butterflies, bees and beetles, and its bitter leaves are unpalatable to deer. The dead stalks and seed heads will stay upright through the winter. Not for small landscapes.
