Carex rosea (curly wood sedge)

This short sedge does well in moist and dry shade, making it a useful ground cover under trees. Similar in appearance to Pennsylvania sedge, but has a clumping habit and does not spread by rhizomes over time. Foot-high mounds of dark green grassy foliage bear small green flowers in spring. Sedges are important plants in our woodland ecosystems, providing food to many small caterpillars.
