A mature Baptisia australis is an imposing 4’ plant, with bushy foliage, stunning dark blue flower spikes in late spring, and interesting seed pods afterwards. Deep rooted and long-lived, Baptisia takes several years to reach its full size and may not bloom till year three or four. The wait is worth it for the beautiful blooms. Loved by hummingbirds, and generally avoided by deer, Baptisia prefers full sun and average to moist soils.
